Swiggy told Gadgets 360 that age verification and user authentication have been made mandatory during the order to prevent misuse of this feature. The user will have to upload his government ID while ordering for age verification. The user will also have to send his selfie for authentication. Customer authenticity will also be checked through OTP during delivery.
Swiggy said that the order of liquor will also be taken in a limited quantity, the order of liquor will not be taken in excess of the quantity prescribed by the state law.
Zomato also informed Gadget 360 that their company has started home delivery of liquor in Ranchi. However, Zomato has not yet clarified what steps it will take to know the authenticity of the user. Zomato also informed that they are going to extend this facility to other cities of Jharkhand in the coming days.
It is worth noting that a few days ago, citing the economic situation, the governments had opened ‘liquor shops’ during the lockdown, whose social distancing was blown away by the people. People got to see long queues outside liquor shops. In such a situation, this move of Swiggy and Zomato will definitely shorten these lines outside the shop.
This is certainly going to be a big change for the food delivery industry, as there is currently no legal provision for home delivery of alcohol in India.
