For the past several years, handset maker Samsung has been launching two flagship S series smartphones – one regular and the other plus version. But this year Samsung has also launched a third variant and that is Galaxy S10e. If we look at the US price of the phone, the Galaxy S10e directly competes with the iPhone XR. The Galaxy S10e is priced at Rs 55,900 in India, which is Rs 10,000 less than the standard Galaxy S10. Apart from this, there is no such flagship smartphone of 2019 that comes in this price segment. Let us now know about the Galaxy S10e in detail.

Samsung Galaxy S10e Design

Galaxy S10Galaxy S10e is the smallest and lightest phone in all three models of the series. The weight of this handset of Samsung brand is 150 grams. It is 0.1 millimeters thicker than the others. We really liked the size of this phone. The Galaxy S10e fits snugly in the hand and its curved edges are not rough at all.

There is a bit of greasiness due to the aluminum and glass back panel, so be careful while using the phone with one hand as it can slip. Fingerprints also fall easily on it. But it is strong nonetheless. If the phone falls, the aluminum frame can get permanently scratched. For example, we were taking a picture of a flower and during that time we lost the phone. Nothing happened to the glass but it got scratched due to falling on the frame.

The Bixby button has been given in the Galaxy S10e. You can set up a double-press or single-press action to open the app, or you can use Bixby. The premium handset of the Galaxy S10 model has an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, but on the other hand, in the Galaxy S10e, the company has given a standard capacitive sensor which is integrated into the power button on the right side of the phone.

It is very sensitive, it unlocks the phone even with a quick touch. You can also enable gestures for easier access to the notification shade. It works fine but we found the placement of the power button slightly up. We did have some trouble accessing the phone even when we held the phone normally.

Samsung

Samsung Galaxy S10e has a 5.8-inch full-HD + Dynamic AMOLED display. The resolution is slightly lower than the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. Its pixel density is 438 ppi. Samsung hasn’t removed the HDR 10+ certification for the display, which means you can enjoy high dynamic range colors in compatible videos. The default color profile makes the color slightly saturated, but you can switch to the natural color profile if you prefer.

If we talk about the biggest difference in design, then the Galaxy S10e does not have a curved display edge on the right and left sides. The other difference is that the Galaxy S10e has slightly thicker bezels on the side if compared to the other two Galaxy models. Gorilla Glass 5 has been used on the front and back of Galaxy S10e. At the same time, Gorilla Glass 6 has been used in the front of its other big model and Gorilla Glass 5 has been used in the back.

Gorilla Glass 5 helps protect the phone from scratches and falls from low heights. At the same time, a new version has been given in both the other models, which better defends the phone. You will already get a screen guard installed on the phone. When compared to other Galaxy S10 models, we notice that the Galaxy S10e has a few cutbacks at the back.

In Galaxy S10e, you will not get a telephoto camera but a dual-aperture. The phone has a 12-megapixel sensor and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor. Apart from this, another thing that you will not find in the phone is the heart-rate sensor. Samsung Galaxy S10e is available in India in Prism Black and Prism White colours. The phone will come with AKG-Tune headset, USB-OTG Type-C to Type-A adapter, fast charger, data cable, SIM eject tool and warranty related information. The thing to note is that you will get a better looking plastic case with the handset.

Samsung Galaxy S10e Specifications and Features

It is undoubtedly an affordable smartphone in Samsung’s flagship model, but its specification is not low-end at all. Galaxy S10e has been brought in India with 8nm octa-core Samsung Exynos 9820 processor. But it has only one variant which comes with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. Its 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage variants are also available in the international market.

Talking about other specifications, it includes hybrid dual-SIM slot, Gigabit LTE, dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6), Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, four satellite navigation system and USB Type-C port.

Samsung

The Galaxy S10e has Dolby Atmos with AKG-tuned stereo speakers. The phone has got IP68 certification which protects it from dust and water and apart from this, the phone has many sensors. This Samsung brand phone runs on the new One UI 1.1 based on Android 9 Pie. This handset of ours is running on February 2019 security patch. We have recently reviewed several Samsung phones that come with One UI.

There are many optional gestures and shortcuts in the phone. App Edge lets you add shortcuts to the most frequently used apps in the bar. These can then be accessed using a simple swipe gesture on the home screen. You can use gestures instead of the standard Android navigation buttons.

You will also get spammy notifications in Galaxy S10e. While setting up the phone, uncheck some term and condition, which can give you some relief. Despite all these precautions, notifications are received even without opening the My Galaxy app. Notifications are not much, but I wish that we could disable them completely. Google Digital Wellbeing feature has also been given in Galaxy S10e.

Samsung Galaxy S10e performance, camera and battery life

The size of the phone is just right to be used with one hand. You will have to stretch your hand slightly to access the notification panel. There is a punch-hole on the front panel of the phone in which the selfie camera has got a place. Fingerprint sensor works fine but it is capacitive. It won’t work if your fingers are wet or greasy. You don’t need to press the power button, just a simple touch will unlock the phone.

In the previous Galaxy S model, the company had given an iris scanner, but this time perhaps due to lack of space in the punch-hole, this feature did not find a place in the phone. The phone has face recognition support but it is not as good as Apple’s Face ID as it performs authentication or, say, identification with the help of the selfie camera. It works well, with the help of screen brightness falling on the face in low-light, it easily recognizes the face.

Like both the other Galaxy S10 models, it also has good general app and UI performance. Despite the phone having 2GB less RAM than both the other models, we didn’t see a big difference in the benchmark numbers. On normal use, we found that the sides of the phone get a bit hot. Sometimes the phone feels a bit hot even while downloading apps from the Play Store. If you keep the case on the phone, then you will not even know about it.

PUBG Mobile and other games run properly in the phone. Due to the powerful processor and low-screen resolution, the Galaxy S10e manages the game smoothly even on the high setting. The framerate is smooth and with the help of One UI Game Launcher, you can enable Dolby Atmos while gaming.

The AMOLED display is very good for watching content. Streaming apps such as Netflix and Prime Video automatically set the video according to the punch-hole area when zoomed. Stereo speakers also make loud noises. Like both the other models, the Galaxy S10e has similar front and rear cameras. It doesn’t just have a telephoto sensor. The performance of the phone is also the same.

In daylight, the phone captures details accurately in landscape and macro modes. Its dynamic range and colors are also good. The Scene Optimizer automatically detects objects such as T-shirts, etc. and it also helps in improving the image. Detail was captured well in macro mode and exposure was handled well.

The camera app is easy to use. Several modes have been given for photos and videos. The wide-angle sensor proves to be very useful for capturing more things in the frame. Live focus works well and edge detection also works well in it. If you want, you can also add background blur effect.

Galaxy Note 9 And Galaxy S9Compared to the -series, there will be a big improvement in the selfie camera of Galaxy S10e. The front camera of 10 megapixels has been given in Samsung Galaxy S10e. The Galaxy S10e does not have an RGB depth sensor, but still it detects the edge correctly in selfies.

Video recording has also not been compromised in the Galaxy S10e. Like other expensive models, this phone is also capable of recording up to 4K video at 60 frames per second. Apart from this, you will also get Super Slo-mo video mode, with the help of which you can record video even at 960 frames per second.

Video quality was good in daylight. Stabilization is also handled well and noise remains under control even in low-light. Galaxy S10e has a battery of 3,100 mAh. After using the camera, watching videos, surfing the Internet and using chat apps, the phone supported for 17 to 18 hours. The good thing is that the charger that comes with the phone charges the battery very fast.

The phone had 5 percent battery when we charged the phone and in an hour the phone was charged 95 percent which is a good thing. With a compatible wireless charger, the phone also supports wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. In our HD video loop test, the Galaxy S10e lasted for 10 hours and 31 minutes, which could be a little better.

our decision

The Galaxy S10e does not have all the features of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. But for Rs 55,900, the Galaxy S10e is equipped with many features of both the other models, which is quite a good thing. This is a better deal than the iPhone XR in India, not only in terms of features but also in terms of price.

Galaxy S10e Competition Google Pixel 3 Which is usually available online for Rs 58,000. If you want a stock Android experience, then Google Pixel 3 can also prove to be a great option. Us OnePlus 6T Let’s not forget, this has also been a good phone. Its 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage variant costs Rs 45,999. Its battery life is also better than the Galaxy S10e. But in this you will not get HDR display, compact size and modern processor.

The battery life is not very good as compared to the other two models. Apart from this, the telephoto camera and in-display fingerprint sensor have also not found a place in the phone. Overall, we think people in this price segment will be satisfied with the features and performance of the Galaxy S10e.
