This year has been very busy for the Motorola brand. moto e, moto c And moto z Handsets have been launched in India. There itself, moto x4 It was recently launched in the international market. Lenovo has cited the growing challenges in the Rs 15,000 price segment as the main reason behind introducing the new handsets of the G series. At the same time, customers are also not avoiding spending too much. Will this strategy work for Lenovo? Let’s know.
Moto G5S Plus and Moto G5S Design
Lenovo sees its Moto G device more as a ‘value for money’ product than a handset with better specifications at an affordable price. These phones are strong as well as functional. But they were never known for their beauty. The Moto G5 and G5 Plus are the first handsets from the company’s Moto G series with a bit of metal. In the special edition device, the company has tried to take this strategy further.
The latest Moto devices have used the same design language. There is nothing wrong in this. Both the phones have fingerprint readers on the front panel which work flawlessly. The front panels of both the handsets are almost identical.
The old-fashioned Micro-USB port is on the bottom of the phone. The speaker grille and microphone have got place on either side of it. There is a circular bulge for the camera, which houses the sensor and flash module. The familiar Moto logo is in the middle and the antenna bands are still clearly visible. Overall, the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus look a lot better than the older variants. Both the handsets are protected from minor water splashes as they come with nano coating.
Moto G5 Plus ,reviewThe Moto G5S Plus is wider and the screen is bigger as well. This phone is not suitable to be used with one hand. It is possible to manage 168 grams of weight. On the other hand, the build quality of the Moto G5S is great. And the design is such that it is convenient to use it with one hand. This 157-gram phone gives a feeling of being light according to its body.
The 5.5-inch full-HD screen of the Moto G5S Plus comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. This is a bright panel. Text and images appear crisp. Colors shine on the screen. We don’t have any complaints about it. Viewing angles and brightness levels are also fine.
The Moto G5S has a 5.2-inch full-HD screen. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection is also present on this. It is made for daily use. Brightness is fine. However, its panel was reflecting more than we would have liked. We had trouble getting a read on it in direct sunlight. Because of this, the brightness had to be taken to the highest level again and again. Viewing angles are good but we had to face a lot of trouble in using it outdoors.
Both the phones come in a green retail box with “special edition” clearly written on the front. This makes it clear that these phones are an upgrade to the fifth generation device of the Moto G phone. You’ll find a turbo power charging adapter, micro-USB cable, SIM ejector tool and headset.

Cameras of Moto G5S Plus and Moto G5S
There is a flood of dual camera smartphones in the Indian market. Moto G5S Plus is the new member of this club. Does it work. It took us some time to get acquainted with its dual camera setup. You have the ability to edit photos even after they have been taken but the photos still need polishing. Backgrounds are sufficiently blurred in depth shots in good light. But the edges do not seem to be clearly defined. Lenovo has to work on this. On the other hand, the Moto G5S Plus appears to be more capable of low-light photography than the Xiaomi Mi A1. We were able to capture decent shots in low light with decent detail and controlled noise levels.
There were natural colors and textures even in regular shots in good light. Landscape shots taken with the Moto G5S Plus were also good. HDR mode also works well. However, we found the highlights to be over-exposed at times in bright conditions.
We believe that in low light conditions, the Moto G5S Plus delivers better performance than the current challenges.
The camera of Moto G5S is much better than that of Moto G5. With phase detection autofocus, the Moto G5S captures the right exposure and remains accurate in autofocusing on most occasions. There was no shortage of detail in the out door shot. But the highlights at times seemed over-exposed. The Moto G5S does a great job in macro shots. We managed to get some great close up shots, even better than the Moto G5S Plus. Landscape shots will be considered average only. There were some drawbacks to the indoor shot. There were no details in shadows or dark areas. The Moto G5S camera becomes weak in low light. There was a lot of noise in our sample shot.
Moto G5S Plus and Moto G5S Performance The Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus do most of the work well. We have never felt the need for more power. There was no problem playing games with powerful graphics on the Moto G5S Plus. There is no complaint with multitasking either. The 5.5-inch display is perfect for watching videos and playing games. However, we do have complaints about the phone overheating. If the camera app is left open for even a short time, then the phone gets hot very soon. This is surprising, because the Xiaomi Mi A1 and Mi Max 2 that come with this processor do not get that hot.
The speaker on the Moto G5S Plus delivers enough sound for a small room. But the sound is not clear at the highest volume. The headset provided with the Moto G5S Plus is of average quality. Don’t expect too much from it. Surprisingly, there was no Voice over LTE support in the handset at the time of review. Because of this, we will be able to make phone calls from Reliance Jio SIM only after using Jio4Voice app in the phone.
The Moto G5S, on the other hand, generally stays cool. It gets a little hot only after playing games or watching videos for a long time. The phone is smooth to use and not slow at all. It has 4G VoLTE and the call quality is decent. Due to the reflective screen, the Moto G5S is not very efficient for multimedia. We had to tinker with the brightness level several times. Loudspeaker gives very clear sound. Along with this, the quality of the given headset is very average.
During the review, we also found that both the handsets get hot during charging. We do not see this deficiency in every device.
Moto G5S Plus and Moto G5S Battery Life
Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus have 3000 mAh battery. Battery capacity was a bit low, as bigger phones have room for a bigger battery. The Moto G5S battery lasted about 18 hours and the G5S Plus’s battery lasted about 14 hours when used hard. In our standard HD video loop test, the Moto G5S lasted 12 hours and 35 minutes while the Plus variant lasted 11 hours and 15 minutes.
The good thing is that both the phones come with TurboPower adapter. The Moto G5S battery gets 100% charged in around 60-70 minutes, while the Moto G5S Plus takes a little longer.
The situation in the Indian smartphone market keeps changing rapidly. In such a situation, Lenovo’s decision to launch a special edition variant seems right. But the users of the old model will be disappointed. With the help of Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus, the company’s product lineup will look fresh. Moto G5S Plus sales will be due to dual camera setup, especially Xiaomi Mi A1 ,review) in front of the challenge. However, the company can further improve the user experience of using dual cameras. Stock Android has always been considered good, but it is also becoming common now. Fast charging support also goes in its favor.
The Moto G5S is much better than the Moto G5. but it Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 ,review) which is available at a lower price. The Moto G5S Plus will compete with the Xiaomi Mi A1 which is also priced slightly lower.
If you are a fan of Motorola, then the Moto G5S Plus or Moto G5S will surely entice you. Because they are excellent in appearance and give good performance in every department according to their price. We expect Lenovo to roll out VoLTE support for the Moto G5S Plus soon. Now apart from Jio, Airtel has also brought VoLTE service.
