Xiaomi has now launched under this series Redmi Note 7S has been launched. Talking about the specification, the same processor has been used in Redmi Note 7S smartphone which is in Redmi Note 7. Like the Redmi Note 7 Pro, the Redmi Note 7S has a 48-megapixel camera. We have tested it to know whether Redmi Note 7S is the best smartphone, let’s know about it.
Redmi Note 7S Design
Redmi Note 7S looks exactly like Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro. Like the Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro, the Redmi Note 7S also sports a glass design that uses Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back panels. This gives the phone a premium look which is not common in this price segment.
Due to the glossy back panel, this phone looks premium but fingerprints fall easily on the back panel of the phone. Xiaomi has given a case in the retail box which fits nicely. The case will protect the devices from fingerprints. From the front side, the Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7S and Redmi Note 7 Pro look similar, which makes it difficult to differentiate between the three.
All three models have a bigger display with a smaller notch. Xiaomi has named it “Dot Notch”. The frame is still made of plastic and the placement of the buttons remains the same. We found that the power button is easily accessible by the hand while the volume button is placed slightly above it. The frame of the Redmi Note 7S is curved, due to which the phone fits easily in the hand.
At the top of the phone, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack along with IR emitter and secondary microphone. The IR emitter is a nifty feature that lets you control your appliances using the Mi Remote app. There are two grilles at the bottom of the phone out of which only one houses the loudspeaker. Apart from this, a USB Type-C port is also provided.
The Redmi Note 7S sports a hybrid dual-SIM tray on the left side. In this case, you can use either two nano SIM or one SIM and one microSD card. The hybrid dual-SIM slot can be a bit disappointing and that too when some of the rival devices have a dedicated microSD card slot.
Like Redmi Note 7 Pro, dual rear camera setup has been given on the back panel of Redmi Note 7S too. The camera module is slightly protruding. The dual-LED flash is placed just below the camera module. We found that the fingerprint scanner is well placed and the hand reaches the sensor easily.
The fingerprint scanner has a matte finish as compared to the glossy rear panel. Xiaomi has launched three color variants of Redmi Note 7S – Onyx Black, Ruby Red and Sapphire Blue. We have Onyx Black color variant of Redmi Note 7S available for review. A 10W charger is available in the retail box of Redmi Note 7S.
Specifications of Redmi Note 7S
The Redmi Note 7S flaunts a 6.3-inch display, especially at the bottom and the border near the camera notch. The display supports full-HD + (1080×2340 pixels) resolution. does sports. Viewing angle and color reproduction of the display is good. Different display modes have been given in the phone, not only this, you can also adjust the color temperature according to your choice.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor has been given in Redmi Note 7S, remember that this chipset was also used in Redmi Note 7. We have seen that the same processor has also been used in the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 (Review) which is also priced in the same price segment. The Snapdragon 660 processor is not as powerful as the Snapdragon 675 chipset given in the Redmi Note 7 Pro.
Xiaomi has launched two variants of Redmi Note 7S, one with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage variant and the other with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage variant. The price of 3 GB RAM variant of Redmi Note 7S is Rs 10,999, while its premium variant is sold for Rs 12,999. Connectivity includes USB Type-C port, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and support for four satellite navigation systems.
Our Redmi Note 7S review unit runs on MIUI 10.3 based on Android 9 Pie, along with the latest May security patch. Although MIUI is very customized, but you will feel the same as before if you are upgrading from any other Xiaomi smartphone. If you want to make any changes in the settings, then the search button will help you.
Theme support is also available in MIUI and lets you customize the look of the software. Redmi Note 7S has a lot of bloatware. The smartphone will come pre-installed on Amazon, Facebook, Netflix, Dailyhunt, Twitter, Opera News and Opera Mini. Xiaomi’s own apps such as App Store, Music, Mi Video, Mi Drop, Mi Community and Mi Pay will also be available. We found the Music and Mi Video apps to be a bit spammy as they kept sending notifications throughout the day. We have covered most of the shortcuts and features of MIUI 10 in our Redmi Note 7 Pro review.
Redmi Note 7S performance, battery life and cameras
The Redmi Note 7S is a capable smartphone that can handle all the tasks of the day with ease. It was easy while scrolling through menus and multitasking between multiple apps. Redmi Note 7S did not slow down at all. Fingerprint sensor also works fast. The face unlock feature is also provided in the phone, it works well in light but it takes more time to unlock the phone in the dark.
The Redmi Note 7S comes with support for Widevine L1 DRM, which will allow you to enjoy Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in HD resolution. The sound from the speaker is loud and we enjoyed watching the content on this smartphone. The speaker space could have been better.
We played PUBG Mobile on the phone and the phone runs smoothly on the medium setting. After playing for about 20 minutes, we found that the area above the fingerprint sensor gets a little hot. Like the Redmi Note 7, the Redmi Note 7S also packs a 4,000mAh battery and offers the same battery life. In our HD video loop test, the Redmi Note 7S lasted for 13 hours and 17 minutes, which is a decent score.
The phone does fast charging. The charger that comes with the phone can charge the phone to 35 percent in half an hour and up to 65 percent in an hour. It fully charges the phone within two hours. The Redmi Note 7S comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 standard support but for this you will have to buy a separate compatible charger.
One major difference compared to the Redmi Note 7 is that the camera setup of the Redmi Note 7S is different. Redmi Note 7S has two rear cameras. There is a 48-megapixel primary camera with F / 1.8 aperture with LED flash. It is accompanied by a secondary camera of 5 megapixels. A 13-megapixel front camera has been given for selfie.
The camera app is similar to what we’ve seen on other Xiaomi phones, and there’s also AI scene recognition support along with HDR and color filters. Various camera modes are also provided including Portrait, Panorama, Night and Pro. During the shoot with the Redmi Note 7S, the camera’s AI comes into action and it can accurately detect plants, buildings and animals. If you are shooting against light, it automatically enables HDR. Color reproduction in pictures was good.
Macro shots were perfect but the phone didn’t show colors properly when taking pictures of flowers. We also found that the edges of our subjects were not as sharp as seen in photos shot with the Redmi Note 7 Pro. Portrait mode uses the secondary camera and we got good bokeh effects but there is no way to adjust the blur level. Edge detection was good but the Redmi Note 7S tends to overexpose some shots.
Low-light performance was also good but the picture looked fine grained. There was a lack of detail in the picture of the object at a distance. Night mode has been given in the phone which makes the pictures bright but at the same time grains are visible in the pictures. The pictures taken from selfies captured the details well and we found that the AI beautification of the phone was also useful. Even with HDR enabled, the background of most of our selfies was overexposed.
The primary camera is capable of recording video in 1080p resolution but you have the option to record at 30 frames per second or 60 frames per second as well. Electronic image stabilization is available in the phone but it is not as effective in low light.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 7S and Note 7 are almost identical when it comes to their hardware. But the main difference between the two is their rear camera module. If you don’t care about camera performance, the Redmi Note 7 offers the same experience at a lower cost. You Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 ,review) and it is available for less than the Redmi Note 7S.
On the other hand if you are looking for a phone with good camera performance then Xiaomi Mi A2 (review) can prove to be a great option for you, which is equipped with stock Android. If you can spend a little more money then the Redmi Note 7 Pro (review) is a very good option.
