Gionee is ‘intelligently’ growing its smartphone portfolio in India. That is to say, like some other Chinese handsets, the Gionee smartphone is not limited to just one price segment.

The company’s ‘S’ series comprises premium handsets and we saw the launch of Gionee S6 earlier this year. Chinese company now Gionee S6 The upgraded variant of Gionee S6S has been launched. Gionee claims that ‘Selfie Flash’ is one of the biggest features of this smartphone. Gionee claims that it is targeting young customers in the age group of 18 to 25 years who are fond of selfies with the new handset.

But will the Gionee S6S with a sleek design made of unibody metal be able to compete with other smartphones in this price range? Learn in review.

look and design
With the unibody design, the Gionee S6S feels comfortable in the hand. Its metal edges offer great grip. But weighing 166 grams, the Gionee S6S is a bit heavy for its size.

The front part of the phone has a 5.5-inch 2.5D curved display that comes with Corning Gorilla Glass coating. While the rear of the phone is made of metal. The phone has a gold lining in the edge on the rear, which gives the phone a premium look. Like its other smartphones, Gionee has given three capacitive buttons for Back, Home and Recent. The front camera is placed above the display along with an LED flash.

There is a rear camera with LED flash on the rear panel of the phone. And a fingerprint scanner is given just below the camera. The new Gionee logo is placed below the fingerprint scanner. There is a speaker grille at the bottom of the rear with the company’s branding. The phone has power and volume buttons on the right side panel while a hybrid SIM slot is on the left. At the bottom, there is a regular Micro-USB charging slot and a 3.5mm audio jack. With a thickness of 8.15 mm, the Gionee S6S is certainly not the slimmest smartphone available in the market, but it did not feel uncomfortable during use.

However, we would like to point out that if the ‘Gionee’ branding was removed from the rear of the handset, the S6S could easily be mistaken for an Oppo, Huawei or LeEco smartphone. The rear panels of many handsets that come with the metal unibody design are now facing one from each side. For example, the placement of the camera remains the same except for the lines on the top and bottom of the handset and the round fingerprint scanner.

The company has launched the S6S in India in Latte Gold and Mocha Gold colours. We got a Latte Gold unit for review.

The 5.5 inch Full HD display given in the phone is sharp and quite bright. We were also able to use the S6S smartphone very well in sunlight. We did not face any problem with the viewing angle during use. The Gionee S6S sports an in-cell IPS display. Watching movies and playing games on the phone was also a fun experience and we did not face any problem during this time.

Overall, the design of the Gionee S6A is quite good and the phone’s build is great. However, the edges of the handset could have been more rounded for easier use.

With Cleanup, new apps can be removed at the top or bottom of the home screen. Apart from this, with Arrange, users can arrange the app in different panes.

Like before, there is no app drawer in the phone and all the apps are visible on multiple home-screens. Many Chinese handset makers have revamped their custom Android versions so that these devices come pre-loaded with fewer apps. However, the same cannot be said for the Gionee as the S6S comes with a lot of pre-installed apps. These include Gionee Xander, Hotoday, Compass, Mobile Anti-Theft App, G Store, System Manager and Mood Wallpapers. The Gionee S6S comes with its Chamilion app that lets you pick a color from an object using the camera to make it a color theme based color.

The Gionee S6S comes with a host of features like fake calls, super screenshot tool, theme park and extreme battery mode setting. Apart from this, other software features given in this phone Gionee Marathon M5 Plus ,review) was also observed.

The software provided in Gionee S6S definitely looks better than Marathon M5 Plus. Marathon M5 Plus runs on Amigo 3.1 which is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. However, the biggest problem with the software is the pre-installed apps that cannot be removed.

We did not face any problem while multitasking on the Gionee S6S nor did we face any performance related problem during everyday use. We noticed that there were some frame drops while playing Dead Trigger 2 on the Gionee S6S. Apart from this, we also felt the heat in the phone while playing games for a long time, but during this time the phone never felt uncomfortable to use.

Voice calls are clear on the Gionee S6S and we did not face any call drops in this handset. We also spent some time reading e-books on the Gionee S6S and we didn’t have any issues with the display. There was no problem with the phone during 4G connectivity, although we could not do VoLTE test in the phone.

Gionee S6S performance was excellent and we were able to run everything in the phone. The phone got decent figures in the benchmarking test.

We will have to discuss the music app in the phone specially because it has a lot of tweaking options. The audio quality from the speaker is excellent and we were able to play loud music without any hassle. The speakers are not very good for watching movies for a long time.

Gionee S6S has a 13MP rear camera with Sony sensor. And with the camera we took some good pictures with good detail and accurate colors. However, there is a lack of detail when zooming and cropping the pictures taken from the phone. But photos taken in low light from the S6S Marathon M5 Plus Comes better than

The biggest feature of Gionee S6S, the company has told its front camera. The best selfies from the phone come with accurate colors if the lighting is good. But, the quality of selfies in low light is also not that good. Gionee has given front flash as well as video flash to make selfies even better. But even this flash does not work very much.

We liked the camera app of the Gionee S6S and it launches instantly. We did not face any problem with the app. Apart from this, the camera has features like Panorama, Slow Motion, Macro, Night, Time Lapse, Text Recognition, HDR, Professional, Smart Scene, Ultra Pixel, Mood Photo, Picnote, GIF and Smart Scan. Apart from this, the camera app also has other features like scene mode, exposure and white balance. Video can be recorded up to 1080 pixels from the rear camera.

battery life
The Gionee S6S smartphone has a 3150 mAh non-removable battery. In our video loop test, the Gionee S6S’s battery lasted for 13 hours and 10 minutes, which can’t be called bad. The battery of the S6S lasts longer than its previous smartphone S6.

Under normal use, the Gionee S6S lasted more than a day. Once fully charged, we were able to run the phone for more than 30 hours. It took just 2 hours to charge the phone from zero to 100%. However, officially this phone does not support fast charging.

our decision
At Rs 17,999, the Gionee S6S is a great package with an all-metal design. But the company is selling this smartphone as the best selfie available in the market and we were not too impressed with the performance of the phone in low light.

Apart from this, we also did not like the overall performance of the phone and we felt problems like heat in the phone while doing serious work and frame drops during gaming. Overall, the Gionee A6s is a decent phone. We did not face any problem during everyday use of the phone.

There are many phones in the market under Rs 15,000 which come with the same specifications as those given in Gionee S6S. We have to see how Gionee will position itself in the market. Due to the low price of S6S, the company can get success for this smartphone in the market. The biggest advantage of Gionee S6S is that it is easily available at offline retailers in the market.
